The work is based on a photo from 1881 that the archeologists E. Pottier and S. Reinach took after the excavations around the nameless creek, located near the ancient city of Gryneion. It depicts tiny sculptures which were found at the site. The photo haunted Deniz while she conducted her research on the creek. Angels (2019) is the product of Deniz’s interest in the multiple layers of history: The date of the artist’s drawing, the date of the photo and the dates of these tiny figurines reveal different time periods. The work is part of the series History of a particular nameless creek (2019) that Deniz produced for the occasion of the 16th Istanbul Biennial.
